Cornell Botanic Gardens 550-acre Monkey Run Natural Area is a very popular hiking destination and is part of a long natural corridor protecting Fall Creek on its route to Cayuga Lake. Trails here, which connect with the Cayuga Trail, follow the creek from the rims of forested banks and at creek level through rich floodplain forest, seeps, and wet meadows. Breathtaking views are afforded from atop 100-foot bluffs, which are continually eroded by a meandering Fall Creek below.

Portions of this trail system are also included in the Cayuga Trail system.

      Enter Apts parking lot, follow sidewalk of left (west) building; descend steps between buildings to the Dryden Rail Trail. To reach the Cayuga Trail, turn left, walk 300 feet – trailhead is on far right of wide cleared area.

    • Dryden Rd @ Mt Pleasant - Get Directions

      Go northwest on Freese Rd 600 ft to bridge. Trailhead for Cayuga Trail going east into Monkey Run is just before bridge.

    • Dryden Rd @ Turkey Hill - Get Directions

      Go north on Monkey Run Rd 1000 ft to parking area and trailheads for Cayuga Trail east and west.

    • Guthrie Ithaca - Get Directions

      Go 1/4 mile south on Hanshaw Rd to trailhead at parking area.

    Fall Creek Gorge Natural Area

    • The section of trail in Fall Creek Gorge west of the suspension bridge to Chi Psi is unstable and closed until further notice.

    Cascadilla Gorge Natural Area

    • A portion of the Cascadilla Gorge Trail between Stewart Avenue and College Avenue will be closed from June 10, 2025 to early September 2025. The trail between Linn Street (Treman Triangle) up to the Stewart Avenue Bridge is now open.

    Beebe Lake Natural Area

    • Hemlock Gorge trail upstream of Sackett Bridge is closed.

    Black Diamond Trail

    • Starting September 2, 2025 park staff will be performing trail maintenance on the Black Diamond Trail between Perry City Road and Garrett Road. Sections of the trail will be intermittently closed between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday. Please use alternate routes during that time. The work is expected to last several weeks.
